Overcoming Challenges of Finding Good Health Care: Forming Partnerships with Health Care Providers

Many adults with Down syndrome (OS) find it challenging to find a health care provider who is knowledgeable and willing to provide high quality medical care. Most health care providers receive little to no training on the medical needs of individuals with OS. In addition, there are a variety of forms of bias in our health care system that contribute to inadequate care. Under these circumstances, how can people with Down syndrome get access to optimal health care? In this presentation, Brian Chicoine, MD, and David Egan will discuss some of the challenges in finding good health care and offer experienced strategies for collaborating with providers to improve the overall wellness of people with OS. They will discuss best practices for working with professionals in health care settings and share resources about health and overall wellness.
