Safe Travel-What Will Work Best For Your Child?

Children with Down Syndrome may require special considerations during transportation in a vehicle and have difficulty riding in a car seat for many reasons including autism or related behavioral concerns. Families and caregivers often report challenges related to safety while in a vehicle. This presentation will provide an overview of basic behavior management strategies that can decrease transportation challenges including behavioral interventions, behavior tools and preventive ideas. Including transportation in the IEP will be discussed. General information regarding car seat safety, car seat selection, use of conventional car seats, potential use of adaptive car seats, and helpful resources will be provided. Participants will interact directly with the instructors and see and try a variety of car seats. This information will help make transportation a safer and more enjoyable experience.
