What we learned at the Adult Down Syndrome Center - From the Real Experts

No one knows people with Down syndrome like their families. Over 27 years, from many thousands of families, we learned that there are unique behavioral characteristics such as, self talk, "grooves," a heightened sensitivity to emotions and social relations, as well as a receptiveness to visual cues and a photographic-like visual memory. These characteristics may be very beneficial and a source of great strength and creativity. For example, a sensitivity to the social environment enhances social relations in work, social or community settings. Unfortunately these characteristics may also be mistaken as a mental health or behavioral problems by the uninformed, such as when people have self talk or an over-sensitivity to social conflict or a heightened vulnerability to phobias or trauma. This workshop will clarify some of the productive and harmless behaviors from bona fide problems and discuss ways and means to promote the best possible use and understanding of these characteristics and the best strategies when problems do occur.
