Using Supported Decision-Making in Healthcare to Promote Independence and Self-Determination in Young Adults

Attendees will learn about transition and life planning focused on supported decision-making as an alternative to full guardianship. This panel will address key issues, examples of state differences, potential barriers, and strategies to educate about considerations and alternatives to guardianship. Attendees will learn ways to use self-determination, person-centered thinking, and supported decision-making principles over the lifespan to maximize the autonomy of their person or a person with Down syndrome. Case studies and real-life examples may be particularly engaging. Attendees will leave with tools and resources that can be accessed in their state and assist in starting to plan their journey from adolescence to adulthood.
