Aging, If It Isn't Your Issue Now, It Will Be. We ALL Get Old? Let's Start Talking About It

This session will be presented by clinical professionals with lived-experiences supporting people with intellectual disabilities and dementia. An overview of the association of Down syndrome and the risk of dementia will be discussed. We will promote partnering with therapeutic professionals to support families and their loved ones through the aging process. Participants will learn about different therapies available and what each offers to support aging people with Down syndrome. The session will provide practical application of therapy tools and equipment, available resources and programs to address progressive dementia. We will utilize case studies that involve multiple therapies and the supportive outcomes developed to illustrate how to prepare for healthy, safe aging. Participants will walk away with skills that will assist them in enhancing the quality of life, prolonging independence, better understand behavioral symptoms, and how to advocate for appropriate referrals and funding to meet the needs of aging.
