Teaching reading to teach talking – the importance of literacy for all

My early research was inspired by a parent telling me that his daughter with Down syndrome could read from the age of 3 years and reading had developed her spoken language. We showed that he was right in our first study with preschoolers and since then, we and other researchers have greatly advanced our knowledge of the reading abilities of children with Down syndrome. This work enables us to refine the way we teach reading. However, books are equally important for readers and for non-readers as book reading also teaches spoken language and enables the most delayed to share their world with 'personal' books. This workshop is for all ages and abilities. I will share effective ways to teach reading and ensure comprehension. I will also stress how reading activities and shared book reading can be designed to develop spoken language and how to make and use personal books.
