Evaluating & Treating ADHD in Down syndrome

Without intervention, ADHD and related behavioral problems in childhood can persist into adulthood and limit successful adult outcomes. However, it can be difficult to know when to seek additional assessment or treatment, especially given limited research in ADHD in individuals with Down syndrome. It is important for parents and caregivers to recognize signs and symptoms of ADHD and when to seek out a comprehensive evaluation with an appropriately skilled clinician. Without proper evaluations and support, symptoms of ADHD can interfere with learning, safety, and social relationships. In this interactive workshop, parents and caregivers will better understand when to consider a potential co-occurring ADHD diagnosis, seek comprehensive evaluations, and obtain treatment in the context of Down syndrome. We will review profiles of individuals with Down syndrome, symptoms of an additional ADHD diagnosis, and what treatment options are available to manage symptoms.
