Develop a Strong Social Skills Toolkit

Strong communication skills are a 'must' to long term success in the workforce, extracurricular activities, and life. Most individuals with Down syndrome struggle with appropriate social skills and application of the skills in different environments. Teaching pragmatics can be challenging to the Down syndrome population given their affinity for concrete learning in contrast to abstract concepts. Intervention frequently focuses on intrinsic motivators and discussing themselves. What are the best strategies in teaching social skills to those with Down syndrome? How can you turn abstract concepts into practical experiences? How do you ensure long term success with conversation skills? What is the best way to practice and reinforce these skills in everyday life? How do you help an individual with Down syndrome switch their focus from themselves to others?
